Privacy Policy
Last updated: 21 July 2026
SelftapePal is built to collect as little personal data as possible. This explains what we handle and why.
Your scenes are stored only on your device. We know actors' material is often confidential or under NDA, so we don't upload or keep it. To hear your cue while a scene runs, audio is sent to our speech-recognition provider — used, then discarded, never stored. The one optional extra is AI script import (below), which sends a tricky script's text for parsing; it's clearly signposted, voluntary, and easy to avoid. Neither your voice nor your scripts are ever used to train AI models.
Who is responsible
SelftapePal is responsible for the personal data described here (the "data controller"). Contact us any time at [email protected].
What we collect
- Your email address — to log you in (via a one-time code) and to identify your subscription. We use it for login and essential service messages only, not marketing.
- Script text — only if you choose AI import. Most script imports happen entirely on your device without any AI. For trickier file formats you can optionally use AI-assisted import, which sends that script's text or file to our AI parsing providers (OpenAI, and possibly Google) to structure it into a scene. This is clearly signposted in the app, entirely voluntary, and easy to avoid. We don't store the script after it's parsed, and it isn't used to train AI models.
- Payment information — handled entirely by Stripe. We never see or store your card details; we only see subscription status (active, cancelled, etc.).
- Audio, briefly, during a run — to detect your cue lines, short segments of your microphone audio are streamed to our speech-recognition provider (Deepgram) for real-time transcription. It's used to run the scene and then discarded. Your voice is never used to train AI models — we've explicitly opted out of that with Deepgram.
- Anonymous usage analytics — which features are used, session length, scene structure stats, cue-detection accuracy, errors, and your device type/browser/OS. This helps us improve the app. It's genuinely anonymous: we don't give your device a permanent identifier, and we can't link these to you or recognise you across visits.
- Usage totals linked to your account — how much speech-recognition time and how many transcriptions your account has used. Unlike the analytics above, this is linked to your email address, because we need it to monitor running costs, apply fair-use limits, and spot abuse. It records amounts of use only, never what you said or what your scene contains. These records are deleted after 30 days, after which only anonymous totals remain.
- Anything you send us through the feedback form — your message, plus your device type/browser/OS so we can make sense of it, and your account if you're logged in. Only when you choose to write to us.
- Approximate country — derived from your IP address, after which the IP is discarded.
What we do NOT store
- Your scripts, dialogue, or scene text — with the single exception of text you voluntarily submit to AI import, which is processed to parse it and not retained afterwards.
- Your audio recordings or self-tapes.
- Your card or payment details (Stripe handles these).
- Long-term IP addresses — IPs are used only briefly, in memory, to prevent abuse and rate-limit requests, and are hashed or discarded rather than kept.
Why we're allowed to process this (lawful basis)
- To provide the service you signed up for (login, running scenes, managing your subscription) — performance of our contract with you.
- To keep the service working, secure, and improving (anonymous analytics, usage and cost monitoring, abuse prevention, rate-limiting) — our legitimate interests, balanced against your privacy.
Who processes data on our behalf
- Stripe — payments and subscription billing.
- Deepgram — real-time speech-to-text during a run.
- OpenAI (and possibly Google) — optional AI-assisted script import, only when you choose it.
- Brevo — sending your login codes by email.
- Cloudflare — hosting and delivering the web app.
- Fly.io — running our server.
Some of these providers process data outside the EU (for example in the United States). They operate under standard legal safeguards for such transfers.
How long we keep things
Your email/subscription record lives with Stripe for as long as you have an account. Detailed analytics logs, and the account-linked usage totals described above, are automatically deleted after 30 days; only aggregated, non-personal statistics are kept beyond that. Audio is not retained — not by us, and not by our speech-recognition provider.
Your rights
You can ask us to access, correct, or delete your personal data, or to object to certain processing. Email [email protected] and we'll respond within 30 days. You also have the right to complain to your local data-protection authority (in Ireland, the Data Protection Commission).
Data on your device
The app stores your scenes, recordings, and settings in your browser's own storage on your device. Clearing your browser data removes them. We don't use tracking or advertising cookies.
Children
SelftapePal isn't intended for children under 16, and we don't knowingly collect their data.
Changes
If we update this policy we'll change the date above. Significant changes will be highlighted where appropriate.
